Many people have dreams and at times seem to know what they want to do but the problem usually is that they do not know how they can take action to succeed in actualizing their dreams of creating wealth. There are issues of lack of start-up capital, lack of ‘connections’, being victims of circumstances beyond their control e.t.c. The solution is not too far. In fact, it lies in your hands.
- Learn to recognize opportunities. Opportunities abound around you. But you must be prepared to take action when opportunities come. At times, you may even have to create the opportunities. Look around and ask some basic questions about happenings around you. Why is this happening? How is it affecting people? How many people does it affect? What can I make of this situation? How can I take action to succeed in maximising this opportunity? If you want to know more about how to recognize opportunities, keep on reading this column. We shall soon publish an article on the subject.
- The internet as a case study. Many do not know of the vast business potentials that exist on the internet. Some feel the internet is only about having e-mail addresses. But countless opportunities to succeed in business abound on the internet. All that is required is some diligence in seeking out such opportunities and the readiness to take action to succeed as a netpreneur. Start taking another look at the internet today. Find out the opportunities that abound therein and begin to position yourself to take action. Just go to the numerous search engines available therein, key in the words of whatever you want to do. Do all the reading and research required and you’ll be on your way to starting a successful internet business.
- Look for something real and long term that will engage your curiosity. Even though it is said that curiosity kills the cat, without being curious the cat would not make much headway in life. So it is with man. If you are afraid to take action in trying out something you’ve fantasized about then you will never have success. A lot of the inventions of today resulted from the curious spirit in man. So, if you are curious enough, you will find something you could start doing even without having all the money or resources in the world.
- See if there is a better way of doing existing things and begin to do it. Do not always seek to re-invent the wheel. All you need do is re-align it to suit your purposes. Look around you, seek out things that are already being done and find ways of doing them better. Seek to create a business from the environment you are in. Don’t always wait until you have all the information you need to start. Josh Billings said that ‘Life consists not in holding good cards, but in playing those you hold well ‘. So, when once you can start, please start otherwise you will never ever start. It’s not because things are difficult that we do not dare; it’s because we do not dare. You will learn along the way.
- ‘Do what you can, with what you have, where you are’-Theodore Roosevelt. You need to know what your position is and accept the fact that you must start from that position because that is where you are. Have a big dream but you do not need to start in a big way. This is the number one problem most people have. For instance, they have a passion for a restaurant business and want to start on a scale like Mr. Biggs, Mcdowells or someting close to them so, they go looking for huge capital to start. They continue looking for ‘capital’ for the next couple of months or years and end up taking no action. Napoleon Hill said ‘Do not wait, the time will never be just right, start where you stand and work whatever tools you may have at your command and better tools will be found as you go along’. Instead of looking for capital to start for instance, at the level of McDowells, why can’t you start from your neighbourhood, birthday parties or small home occasions? You could even give out your recipes as gifts during such occasions and that would be the little step you need to take towards that big dream of yours. Once again we say, look around; what do you already have that could be of use in what you want to start? When once you’ve identified it, take action to succeed immediately. Whatever you have might not be enough but it contains the potential for what you want. So, start!
- Do not be fooled, your friends or members of your families can assist you in starting a business. But you need to learn the secret of getting assistance from them. What is the secret? Start out by requesting for little sums of money and not large sums. Write down the names of five to eight of your family members or friends that you believe may be in a position to help. Go to them and ask for a loan from each of them, sincerely explaining what you need the money for and what you already have if any. If you have already established a reputation for honesty and integrity, you would most likely get the required assistance if not outright gifts. Why? Because most people are willing to give little sums of money that they can afford to loose if not paid back. Most people are ready to help those that are serious about changing their situation. When you have gotten the money, it is very important you use it for the purpose for which you borrowed it! We challenge you to try this method but make sure you’ve done all the necessary research into what you want to start and the chances to succeed outweigh that of failure because no one would want to put their money into something that is obvious would fail.
- You could also seek assistance from banks. In most parts of the world, banks and finance institutions are ready to help small and medium scale enterprises to develop but you need to have a bright and sellable idea. Remember, ideas are the beginning of a good enterprise.
- Finally, you must learn to take action to succeed! Unfortunately, some of you will read this article but will not take action to succeed. It would be ah, it would not work! You will give all kinds of reasons why it will not work but if you desperately want a solution to your situation, you will rise up and try out some of these suggestions by taking action now!
So, what are we saying? Simple. You are destined to be a success in life starting with what you have! But you must TAKE ACTION TO SUCCEED today! Don’t wait another moment. Don’t procrastinate. Remember, procrastination is the No. I enemy of business success! You must defeat it by taking action NOW!

Chris,
Your messages are very powerful! The best part is that they really make me think. It is so easy to be complacent and “stuck” where we are in our lives. One of my favorite phrases is : “woulda, shoulda, coulda”,if”. I have been there, done that, and still sometimes do it.
I work for the Dale Carnegie Institute of Kansas City. Approximately, a month ago I created a site (blog) called “Share Milestones” to stay in touch with past graduates and “Dale Carnegie want to be’s”. Last week, I gave you a plug by posting the link to your article on “The Best Investment Most People Don’t Care About”. What an awesome message! Hopefully, some of my readers (distribution is over 160 people) will check out more of your work. I will.
Thank you for sharing with the rest of us!
Jack
Thanks for the inspiration!
