There is one thing we must all accept which is that we are responsible for most of our circumstances. We must recognize our responsibility to make things happen or not happen. We must learn not to pass the buck for our situation in life. This is not to say that we are always and solely responsible for our circumstance but the truth is that we are largely responsible! If this is the case, it then follows that we are responsible for the friends we keep and consequently, the influence they have on us.

A friend according to the Encyclopedia of English Language is someone on terms of affection and regard for another who is neither relative nor lover, someone who freely supports and helps out of good will. According to Henry Ford a friend (and we add ‘a true friend’) is anyone who brings out the best in you.

What is that one thing you have defined as supremely important in your life and how do the friends you keep help you achieve it?

If you really want to succeed in life you need to take a second look at the kind of people in whose company you are regularly found. Are they the type of people that add value to your life or detract from you? Would they assist you climb the highest mountain or lead you to nose dive into the deepest ocean? If you want to unlock your hidden potentials, John C. Maxwell said, spend your time with people who will speed you up. Find someone who thinks faster, runs faster, aims higher. Those are the people who will lift you up.

Friends that would bring out the best in you would have the following qualities among others:

  • Fear of God because that is the beginning of wisdom
  • Believe in you and your vision. Mark Twain said keep away from people who belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you too can become great.
  • Enhance your area of time management. If all they do is help you spend your time doing unproductive things, we tell you, you can do without such friends.
  • Positive speech with financial literacy
  • Be a good listener
  • Have an investment mentality. They focus on investment and not income.
  • Not complainers or destructive critics.
  • Be ready to pay the price to get what they want.
  • Be ready to take their destiny into their hands.
  • Live within their means and not perennial borrowers.

If you truly want to have a more fulfilling life and to attain financial freedom fast you should seriously take a closer look at your friends and be willing to change some or all of them if need be. Do not leave relationships whether casual or serious to mere chance. If you are still unmarried, the type of person you marry should be of critical importance to you. This is simply due to the fact that such a person may make or mar you – for life. Remember that the type of opportunities that come your way depends on whom you associate with. According to Brian Tracy the direction of your life will be changed by a simple comment, a piece of advice, or a single action by one person. Have a mentor. A mentor is someone who has already done what you want to do and is successful at doing it. From the mentor you learn their mistakes and determine not to make them while striving to move up faster with lesser mistakes.

How do you begin to cultivate the friendship of the right kind of people?

  • Start by becoming a better person because you can only attract to yourself those that are like you. Swami Chinmayananda said a true friend is discovered not by searching outside for a right person to befriend, but by growing to be a right person to deserve a friend. So start with yourself. What kind of person are you and would others pick you as a true friend that would bring out the best in them? Brian Tracy said the quality and quantity of your relationship with other people will determine your success as much or more than any other factor. His law of relationships explains that relationships are essential; the more people who know you and think of you in a positive way, the more opportunities you will have to achieve your goals. It is believed that you inevitably attract into your life the people and circumstances in harmony with your dominant thoughts. So what kind of person are you?
  • Get involved in what is happening in your community. This way you get to know more people. Look for opportunities where you can give a helping hand.
  • Be generous and helpful in all you do. Look for ways to do things for others without counting cost or returns.
  • Join Organizations and Associations that have the kind of people you want to associate with.
  • Learn to refer business to others. Remember the law that says do unto others what you would want them to do to you.

Note that at virtually every point in your life, someone is standing there to either help you or hinder you. Successful people (of which you want to be) make a habit of building and maintaining a network of high – quality relationships throughout their lives. Why don’t you start building and maintaining such a network?

Now is the time to go and TAKE the required ACTION. Check your friends and begin to TAKE ACTION TODAY by eliminating the unnecessary ones. As Baron de Rothschild said, make no useless acquaintances!
