What is success? Is it just having massive material comfort, possession of several titles and academic degrees? Certainly not, success involves planning all aspects of your life. To be truly successful in life, you need to determine where you are coming from, who you want to be, the means through which you will get there and then begin to take those actions that would guarantee success.

Where Are You Coming From?

In life, you must have a starting point. Your starting point is who you are right now. Most times when you are asked to introduce yourself, you would likely say your name, your profession or where you live. But does this really tell who you are? No, it only explains your present preoccupation. To really know who you are, you have to look beyond your economic, professional, cultural and civil position as compared with your beliefs, values, and principles. Again, your experiences in life will assist in giving you insights on your positive and negative perspectives, your skills, ideas, abilities and disabilities, your areas of strength or weakness. At the conclusion of this exercise, you will be in a position to truly determine who you are and where you are coming from and whether you are ready to take any action that would guarantee you success.

Who Do You Want To Be?

Without knowing where you are coming from or who you presently are, you wouldn’t know who you want to be or where you want to go. Knowing who you are at the moment is important as it would enable you have a clearer idea of who you eventually want to be. You would also begin to know the things you need to change in your life so as to become who you want to be and also the things you need to add on. If you do not know yourself well enough, you won’t be able to clearly see who you want to be. Who you want to be should be all encompassing covering your emotional, spiritual, physical and intellectual life.

Through What Means Do You Want To Be That Person?

By what means do you want to reach your destination? What is your goal in life? You cannot have a goal if you do not know yourself for it would simply mean that you do not know what you want nor how to get it. In fact, one of the things goal setting does is to enable you know yourself. So, to a large extent, your goals would depend on what you know about yourself. After determining your goals in life, you should then draw up a mission statement that would serve you as a guiding principle to take action.

What Do You Require To Be That Person?

Your knowledge, skills, ideas and attitude are some of the basics you require to be a successful person. These are the tools that say how good you are and which will assist you in achieving your goals. This being the case, you need to take another look at what you presently possess, determine whether it is enough to get you there and if not, determine what else you need to pick up in the course of your journey. Do you need more knowledge in a particular field? Do you need to meet some particular person? Do you need to discard some habit? This self-assessment will give you insights on your ability to achieve.

What Are The Indices That Show You Are On The Right Track?

On the route to success, you need some sign posts that will tell you whether you are on the right track or not.

These are called goals and they confirm if you are on the right track or not.

They are the measures of your success. They must be realistic, attainable, measurable, and time specific. What this means is that if you truly want to achieve your plans, you cannot set two major goals that run concurrently at the same time. You must set a specific target; achieve same before moving on to the next.

Would There Be Delays, Detours And Speed Bumps On The Way?

The purpose of planning is to make your route to success smoother and to avoid a situation where you can make decisions that can make you lose your way. But no matter how focused you are, there are times that circumstances clearly beyond your control can cause delays, and give rise to situations beyond you. Like in every thing in life, there could be unexpected delays, detours, and speed bumps but you must anticipate them and prepare for them by taking all appropriate actions that will guarantee success. This means having a back up plan.

So, arise, make that plan and take action to succeed at it.
